What is CASH?
The re-loadable CASH card is the reliable alternative to small change. With CASH, you can pay small amounts quickly and easily – provided you have already loaded your CASH card at an ATM.


Which cards have the CASH chip?
CASH will no longer be a supplementary function on Maestro cards from September 2010 but will instead only be offered as an independent card. The CASH function will remain on existing Maestro cards until they expire.


Where can I load CASH?
Loading your CASH card is very easy and you can load your card at any ATM in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Insert your Maestro card, MasterCard or PostFinance card into the ATM and follow the on-screen instructions given under “CASH functions”.


How much money can I load onto my CASH card?
The CASH chip can be loaded with an amount between CHF 20.-- and CHF 300.--. The maximum amount is CHF 300.--.


How can I load my CASH card?

A CASH card costs CHF 15 (CHF 10 for more than 10 cards).


For how long is a CASH card valid?
A CASH card is valid for 2 to 3 years.


How much does it cost to load CASH?
The fee for loading CASH with a Swiss Maestro or a PostFinance card at an ATM is based on the fee rate charged by the ATM operator. Loading is free if the card issuer and ATM operator are the same.

The fee for loading CASH with a MasterCard or an international Maestro card is based on the cash withdrawal fee rate charged by the card issuer.

What happens if I lose my card?
The credit on the CASH card is comparable to money in a traditional change purse. The remaining credit cannot be blocked if the card is lost or stolen and, as with stolen cash, thieves can use the remaining balance, but the amount that can be lost is never more than CHF 300.


What happens if my card is faulty? How do I get a replacement card?
Simply fill out the balance refund form and send it, enclosing the card, to:

What happens to the balance when a card expires?

  • CASH card: Simply fill out the balance refund form and send it, to us enclosing the card.
  • Swiss Maestro card with CASH function: The remaining balance will be automatically credited to your account.

Can I unload my CASH card at an ATM?
No, the balance on a CASH card cannot be unloaded at an ATM.


Where is the money that is stored on a CASH chip?
The amount of the accumulated balance loaded onto a CASH card but not yet spent is in the “CASH pool”. This pool is deposited in an interest-bearing account. The income from these deposits is primarily used to co-finance the operation and further development of CASH.


When is CASH being separated from Maestro?
New Maestro cards ordered from 1 September 2010 will no longer have a CASH function. Maestro cards with an expiry date of 2010 will be automatically replaced in the autumn of 2010 with no CASH function on the new cards. Existing Maestro cards with the CASH logo printed on them will retain the CASH function until they expire.


Why can some Maestro customers continue using CASH but others not?
Maestro cards are automatically renewed every 3 years. As this does not happen at the same time for all cardholders, it can happen that some cardholders already have new cards without the CASH function while others have old cards still with the CASH function.
